Martial Machinations was founded by Christopher Halpin in April 2018 in order to help communicate his love for historical European martial arts to a wider audience as well as to facilitate the teaching of non-historical reality based self-defence.
Chris has been involved in martial arts for the majority of his life, having started with judo and karate before studying iaido, kenjutsu, and jujutsu, as well as escrima some years later. In 2007 he discovered historical European martial arts (HEMA), and his first sword-related love, backsword and broadsword. HEMA became a passion and in 2013 he began instructing and set up the York School of Defence as a chapter of the larger and well established Hotspur School of Defence under marshal Robert Brooks.
Chris regularly teaches classes and helms study groups looking at medieval fencing dagger and wrestling, catch-as-catch-can wrestling, and classical pugilism. He has recently began delving back into the texts and sources that first created a love of HEMA, notably a variety of backsword/broadsword, quarterstaff and wrestling treatises from the 18th century.
Martial Machinations is effectively the ‘brand name’ for Chris and his colleagues and their martial arts related activities and events including the York School of Defence as well as a reality based self-defence class, lectures and private consultancy work for a variety of organisations.
